Es gibt Momente im Leben, an denen man Weichen stellt. Scheidepunkte. Manchmal bahnen sie sich zunächst unbewusst an, als vage Vorahnung vielleicht, die sich schemenhaft im dichten Nebel abzeichnet. Zunächst kaum erkennbar, aber im Lauf der Zeit immer konkreter bis man direkt vor der Weggabelung steht und sich entscheiden muß: links oder rechts?

Wir haben unsere Entscheidung getroffen. Sie war nicht gerade leicht, aber eigentlich immer unausweichlich.

Um es auf den Punkt zu bringen: Wir haben gerade einen Bauernhof gekauft.

Exit, Please!

There are always decisive moments in life. Decision points. Sometimes they approach as vague concepts at first, barely visible schemes in the fog of future possibilities. Over time though, they become increasingly concrete and begin to create a certain urgency, until you’re standing at the junction and are forced to decide: left or right?

We made our decision. It wasn’t easy, and we lost a lot of sleep over it, but ultimately it was unavoidable.

To cut a long story short: We have purchased a farm.

In Iceland.

Dort wollen wir unsere Faszination für Island mit unseren Gästen teilen, und ihnen neben Übernachtungen auch geführte Reit- und Wandertouren in einer fantastischen Umgebung anbieten. Für Fotografen und erfahrene Reiter wird es spezielle Angebote geben.

Wir freuen uns schon sehr darauf, user Abenteuer mit Euch zu teilen! Alle Details dazu werden wir Euch in den nächsten Wochen mitteilen; im August geht’s los und ab September öffnen wir für unsere Gäste!

We will share our fascination for this unique country with our guests, and not only offer accommodation, but also guided horse riding and hiking tours in a fantastic landscape. Photographers and more experienced riders will appreciate our special offers, custom tailored to their individual preferences.

We are already looking forward to sharing this huge adventure with you, and will have many more details for you over the next weeks. The move will be in August, and from September we will be welcoming our guests!

Frühjahrsputz!

In einer Woche werden wir unseren Online Store aufräumen – noch gibt es dort ja einige Gratis Downloads vergangener Bewerbe, aber irgendwann müssen wir mal Platz für Neues schaffen. Also schnell vorbeischauen, bevor es zu spät ist!

Early last week I noticed something strange on Wikipedia. It appeared that, gradually, over time, the volunteer editors who create the site had begun moving women, one by one, from the “American Novelists” category to the “American Women Novelists” subcategory. Female authors whose last names began with A or B had been most affected.

Was für ein Land!

What a country!

Auf Einladung von ASKIMO und DAV war ich auch dieses Jahr wieder beim Blåtind Arctic Race. Ein fantastisches Rennwochenende. Das Sprintrennen mitten in der Stadt am Samstag gibt eine einzigartige Kulisse, an die man sich aber auch erst einmal gewöhnen muß…

The ski mountaineering national teams of Austria and Germany invited me (again) to cover the Blåtind Arctic Race for them. What a fantastic race weekend. The sprint on Saturday was situated in the heart of Tromsø – a spectacular setting that does take some getting used to, considering that these races are usually held far from civilization…

Das Format der Sprintrennen ist auch für Fotografen und Zuschauer sehr spannend – mehrere Durchgänge erlauben viele Perspektiven, und die Athleten starten in kleinen Gruppen und geben auf der kurzen Strecke wirklich Vollgas. Genial!

The format of sprint races is great for spectators and photographers alike – multiple heats allow you to experience the event from various perspectives, and the athletes race in small groups and really go full throttle on the short track. Awesome!

Das Einzelrennen am Sonntag bot dann eine ganz andere Perspektive, fernab der Zivilisation. Für Fotografen war auch diese Strecke fast perfekt – mit wenigen Positionswechseln konnte man die Teilnehmer drei- bis viermal beim Aufstieg und auf der spektakulären Abfahrt erwischen, und das Panorama war einfach fantastisch: die Athleten, die Berge und das Meer.

The individual race on Sunday presented an entirely different setting, although one that was equally rewarding: the athletes, the mountains, and the sea. That’s pretty much all you’ll ever need for a great shot. And with just a few changes in position, you could see the participants three or even four times on the ascents and the spectacular downhill.

Die letzte Abfahrt hatte sich gewaschen. Eine steile, enge Abfahrt auf hartem, ruppigen Schnee. Im Renntempo eine ausgesprochen spektaktuläre Sache!

That last downhill was particularly spectacular. A steep, narrow descent on hard and very rough snow. Not that anybody slowed down even the tiniest bit!

Letztes Jahr bin ich im Anschluß eine Woche lang mit Ski von einer Berghütte der Troms zur nächsten getourt, um die fantastische Winterlandschaft zu genießen und fotografisch festzuhalten. Dieses Jahr hatte ich ähnliche Pläne, aber mit Pulka und Zelt. Vorher ging’s noch mit Seppi und Bernhard über die Berge von Lyngen. Leider ließ die Schneesituation keine weiteren spektakulären Touren zu…

Last year, I followed up the race spectacle with a week of ski touring from one alpine hut of the Troms to the next, enjoying the winter landscapes and taking pictures. This time around I had similar plans, only with a Pulk and tent. Before I set off on my own, I joined Seppi and Bernhard for a traverse of the Lyngen alps. Unfortunately the snow conditions weren’t favorable and we had to abandon any hopes for steep couloir skiing.

Während die beiden noch weiter auf Lyngen blieben, durchquerte durch Lyngen und Troms bis zurück nach Tromsø – in Summe waren’s letztlich knapp 80km, bei wechselnden Bedingungen von strahlendem Sonnenschein bis zu komplettem Whiteout und verregneten, stürmischen Nächten.

So while the others stayed on Lyngen for a little longer, I made the traverse back and continued onwards all the way to Troms, 80km in total. Luckily I had pretty good conditions most of the time. I only got rained out during the nights, and got into pretty bad whiteout conditions on the last day.

So bin ich mit etwas weniger Landschaftsbildern heimgekommen als erhofft, aber mit nicht weniger tollen Eindrücken und Erinnerungen. Und so ist das eben in Norwegen: man weiß nie so genau was die Natur vorhat, aber genau das macht auch den Reiz des Landes aus.

While I didn’t find all the landscape photos I was hoping for (particularly because I was hoping for a few clear nights in the mountains), I still came back with tons of great memories. And that’s how it is in Norway: You never know what the weather will be like tomorrow. Which is in part what’s so great about this place.

Falls Ihr Euch mal gefragt habt, was denn so alles in den Rucksack reinkommt wenn ich mit den Skibergsteigern unterwegs bin, findet Ihr hier die Antwort!

Natürlich ist das auch jedes Mal etwas anders; in Vallnord zB. gab’s die Möglichkeit direkt nach dem Wettkampf noch am Berg online zu sein und nicht erst im Hotel, also war der Laptop mit dabei. So konnte ich in der Zeit zwischen dem Rennen und der Flower Ceremony schon die ersten Bilder abliefern.

Ganz schön viel Zeug…

If you’ve ever wondered what goes into the backpack when I’m on the mountain with the ski mo guys, here’s the answer.

Of course this always changes a bit; in Vallnord we had the opportunity to go online directly after the events without having to return to the hotel. So I was able to use the time between the competition and the flower ceremony to edit and upload the first images.
