How do you describe a country where elements collide, fire and ice wage war, where the sun doesn’t set in summer and night falls for half a year in winter?

You don’t. You stand back in awe and hope your feeble attempts at capturing its beauty photographically, although doomed to fail, at least convey a glimpse of what it really is.

Inga also created a wonderful set of images that can be found in her Flickr Set. Also, zoomable versions of my panoramic and large format shots can now be found in the new Panoramas & Large Format section.

Mountains, rivers, rain & all-terrain horses.

Man, I can’t even begin to describe how great it feels to unplug completely for a while, and not even check your mail for two weeks. The only thing we looked up on the internet was the train schedule between the village we were staying in and Hamburg. Apart from that, no email, no Facebook, no blogs, no RSS feeds, no nothing. Just us, the horses and whatever we damn felt like doing that day.

Like shooting pictures. Lots of them.

Things we did, in part documented by the above slide show:

ride Colossus, the world’s steepest wooden roller coaster (61º), and Desert Race, which catapults you from zero to 102 km/h in 2.4 seconds (peak acceleration 4.7G), at the Heide-Park
feed (daily) and ride (occasionally) Inga’s icelandic horses
visit Hamburg, including the famous Speicherstadt (old commercial district) at day and night
go on longish road bike rides (often), and marvel at the courtesy of the car drivers (who seemed to prefer the risk of a head-on collision to the option of allowing us less than a full lane when passing)
explore the Pietzmoor marsh on foot (without drowning)
see the ship hoist in Scharnebeck that was, at the time of construction, the largest in the world

It was thoroughly refreshing.

Graphics Hardware / SIGGRAPH 2007, San Diego

Last Friday I arrived in San Diego to attend two conference: The Graphics Hardware 2007 which started yesterday and has its second and final day today, and then of course SIGGRAPH 2007 starting tomorrow (where I’ll be presenting a poster!).

The Graphics Hardware conference is really a small but high quality event.. not too many publications, only a single track (no parallel sessions) such that you’re guaranteed to see all the talks, and the attendees are really top notch. If you’re keen on collecting signatures from famous personalities of computer graphics, this would be the place to go – probably even more so than SIGGRAPH, where the top guys vanish a bit in the mass of participants (about 25.000!)…

Last night we also had the social event of Graphics Hardware, a dinner cruise in the San Diego Bay. Generally a great opportunity to do some ‘networking’ and talk to other participants, but we were so jetlagged or otherwise beat up (I think that some of the airplane food was spoilt) that we mostly hung around lethargically…

Hamburg

Last weekend I visited Hamburg, together with my best friend Nicole Kolar. She had organized the trip as a gift for my promotion, together with her and my parents, so that we could see the Dalai Lama there. In a nutshell – what an awesome weekend! Both our day trip to Helgoland (with a slightly complicated, but also very interesting return trip) and of course especially the talk of the Dalai Lama were an outstanding experience!
