Challenge the Wall – Qualifications

Yesterday the qualifications for the Challenge the Wall event took place at the Kletterhalle Wien climbing center.. I’m not really good enough to participate, but I took the opportunity to snap a few pictures as a test for the main event next Saturday…

so much snow it makes grown men cry

Another early sunday, another backcountry tour. Sound familiar? This morning Niko and I made a trip up the Blahstein near Mürzzuschlag. And boy was that a great idea. Tons and tons of fresh, powdery snow, and relatively safe avalanche conditions in the forests and clear cuts. The general avalanche danger was level 4 – severe [...]

Tiefschneespass

deep powder fun

Another evening, another nighttime backcountry skiing trip with Niko, another iPhone video. Not the best quality, but not too bad. No still photos this time because the camera’s batteries disliked the low temperatures… sorry. In a nutshell: knee-deep fluffy powder, terrain not steep enough to ski properly, but still lots and lots of fun.

Backcountry skiing the Hochstaff

Unfortunately the avalanche danger is very high at the moment, so ‘big’ mountains are out of the question for now. But we did get tons of fresh snow lately, so Niko and I went for one of the lower mountains today, where the forests protect from avalanches (but keep the adrenaline high with their own little surprises, like hidden branches and tree stumps). Snow covered landscapes, fresh powder all the way down to the valleys, and especially in the (nicely skiable) forests … nice!
